This year, the Administration announced its proposed budget request for the Fiscal Year 2017, which contained cuts to the defense budget, including $7 billion in cuts to Navy warships and personnel. Additionally, the Administration announced its plan to deactivate one of the U.S. Navy's ten Carrier Air Wings. In addition, the Administration has also repeatedly attempted to mothball half of the Navy's cruisers, some of the Fleet's most capable warships. In response, Congressman Forbes authored legislation in his Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee to stop the Administration’s plan to scrap 1 out of 10 Carrier Air Wings, protect 1/12th of the Navy fleet from inactivation, authorize 3 more warships than the Administration requested, and begin building the 350 ship Navy that the U.S. requires. This legislation was included in the annual defense policy bill and passed in the Armed Services Committee this week. It will now move to the full House of Representatives for a vote in the coming weeks.
