Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) highlighted a new report today showing that 4.2 million African Americans’ health care costs could be reduced through the Health Insurance Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act. Compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services, the report also showed that 95 percent of eligible African Americans could have costs reduced if all 50 states expand Medicaid.

“Today’s report is further proof that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is helping address health disparities by reducing costs for health care coverage in our most vulnerable communities,” said Congresswoman Edwards.  “Thanks to the ACA, 6.8 million uninsured African Americans have access to affordable, quality, health care coverage, including free preventive services. This will result in improved overall health for African Americans across our country.  But the gains for the African American community should be even greater: all 50 states should put politics aside and expand Medicaid to give 95 percent of eligible African Americans the health care coverage they deserve.”
