FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 27, 2013

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement after the Senate passed a clean continuing resolution funding the government through November 15, 2013.

“Today, the Senate passed a clean continuing resolution that keeps 2.1 million federal workers on the job and ensures our National Parks, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Institutes of Health can remain in operation, and that our active duty service members get their paychecks on time.  While I voted against and remain opposed to sequestration, our economy cannot afford any more self-inflicted wounds with a government shutdown.  The time for political games and fiscal brinksmanship is long over. House Republicans should take up the Senate bill and pass it without further delay to continue government operations. We should proceed responsibly after November 15 with long-term fiscal year 2014 appropriations.

“I thank Senator Mikulski for her leadership on this issue. A government shutdown would have a severe impact on Maryland’s economy. It is my hope now that pragmatism prevails and House Republicans give up attacking the Affordable Care Act so federal workers can receive their paychecks, veterans can receive their disability checks, and seniors can continue to rely on their Social Security. Then, we must act separately, independently and without bargaining or bartering to meet the full faith and credit obligations of the United States to pay our bills on time."”
