FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 12, 2013

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement today denouncing the Republican effort to shut down the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), tasked with resolving differences between business and labor.  H.R. 1120 would not permit the NLRB to issue any new decisions, enforce existing decisions, or advance any rulemaking in preventing and remedying unfair labor practices. The legislation would also prevent defending the right of employees to join a union and bargain collectively with their employers until a quorum of NLRB board members are confirmed by the Senate, the Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of the recess appointees, or the recess appointees' terms expire at the end of this year.  The legislation passed the House by a vote of 219-209.

β€œOn the 100th day of the Republican Congress, instead of voting on a bill to spur job creation, we have another shameless attempt by Republicans to strip the rights of workers and weaken the middle class. By undermining fundamental protections for our workers, Republicans are standing in the way of the better wages necessary to achieve an open, fair, and prosperous economy for all. If we are to truly expand economic opportunities for the middle class, we must start respecting those who work tirelessly every day.”
