Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement on the Republican Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Resolution, the Ryan-Republican budget. The Budget Resolution passed the House by a vote of 221 to 207.

“For the third year in a row, the House has passed a partisan budget that fails to create jobs and starves the federal government to permanently reduce our public investments, the safety net, education, and research and development.  By slashing these critical investments, women would be disproportionately harmed. According to the U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce, this budget ‘attacks the economic interest and security of women at every level’ – by erasing 930,000 jobs for women, eliminating access to affordable health care and education, undermining our children’s health care security, and ending Medicare as we know it for seniors and future generations. Yet Republicans still manage egregious tax breaks for the wealthy – and cannot name a single loophole to eliminate.

“A budget is a statement of our values, and this Republican budget does not reflect America’s values.  Chairman Ryan and my Republican colleagues have not gotten the message, and it could not be any clearer that Republicans have nothing more to offer than more of the same.  We should pass a fair budget that reduces our deficit responsibly and values every person, including women, children, and seniors, by getting people back to work and investing in America’s future.”
