FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 12, 2013

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address to Congress.

“President Obama laid out a bold, specific vision for our country tonight that prioritizes economic growth through job creation and middle class expansion.  I stand with the President’s initiatives to invest in infrastructure and innovation, particularly in advanced manufacturing, education, and energy production. As the President stated, these are areas that will create jobs and expand economic growth in our country right now without adding to the deficit. But the President is also seeking to lay the foundations necessary to address the challenges that lie ahead.  By making long-term investments in infrastructure, energy, early education, and college affordability a priority, we are creating the pathways to a highly skilled workforce that will compete in a 21st Century global economy.

“I welcome the President’s announcement to reduce significantly the number of service men and women in Afghanistan by the end of the year.  He continues to deliver on his promise to bring this war to a close and return those who have served with the utmost bravery home to their loved ones.

“There is still much more work ahead of us, to once again focus on the priorities that have made our nation great.  We must make our schools and streets safer, upgrade our infrastructure, and ensure equal opportunity and pay for all Americans.   I will continue to work with President Obama and my colleagues in Congress to meet these challenges and serve the American people.”
