Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the below statement today regarding the House Republican bill to suspend the debt ceiling. The bill, H.R. 325, would only suspend the debt ceiling as necessary until May 18, 2013. The legislation passed the House by a vote of 285-144.

“House Republicans have once again failed to put forth a serious proposal to pay our nation’s bills,” said Congresswoman Edwards. “The international markets, business leaders, and America’s families deserve to have confidence that Congress will not allow a default over spending it has already authorized.   We must move forward with a plan that provides a long-term solution to the debt ceiling, and come together with a balanced approach to reduce our deficit and grow our economy.

“This is no time to play chicken with our nation’s finances, resulting in another possible downgrade of our credit rating and recession.  I urge my House Republican colleagues to stop manufacturing crises to score political points.”
