Edwards Statement Commemorating Labor Day

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement to commemorate Labor Day, observed on September 5, 2016.

“The work ethic, ingenuity, and commitment to excellence of American workers drive our nation’s economy. On this Labor Day, I want to thank our nation's workers,” said Congresswoman Edwards.

“Each day, millions of Americans go out into the world and dedicate their time and efforts to achieving great things in their professions and in their workplaces. Their hard work and dedication to success make it possible for our economy to grow and for millions of Americans to support their families.

“The American workforce is the most diverse it has ever been, with more women, people of color, and multiple generations in the mix. While each group has different needs, the overarching needs of equal pay for equal work, affordable child care, paid family leave, and reducing student loan debt are ever present. In Congress we must remain focused on improving the quality of life for American workers.

On this Labor Day let us rededicate ourselves to strengthening the right to organize to ensure our diverse workforce is equipped to take on the challenges of building an economy that works for all in the 21st century.
“I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday. Let’s continue to work towards building an American workforce that’s strong and full of opportunities that benefit all workers and their families.”
