Edwards Statement Celebrating National Women’s Health Week

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement today commemorating National Women’s Health Week. The 17th annual National Women’s Health Week is an observance led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health to empower women to make their health a priority. National Women’s Health Week kicked off on Mother’s Day, May 8, and is celebrated through May 14, 2016.

Throughout her time in Congress, Congresswoman Edwards has fought for women’s health and access to healthcare through the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Edwards has also broadened the conversation around topics of women’s health through programming for residents of the 4th Congressional District. In honor of Women’s History Month and the 6th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act in March 2016, Edwards hosted a roundtable in the 4th Congressional District on Women’s Health: A Conversation about the Challenges & Opportunities to Reduce Health Disparities for Women and Girls of Color.

“It is clear that women’s health is connected to the overall community’s health,” Edwards said. “There are a number of gaps we have not yet filled, and there is a need for flexibility in education and integrated health care for families that cuts across race, gender, and socio-economics.

“The passage of the Affordable Care Act is a step in the right direction to make healthcare more affordable and accessible for countless Americans. Especially beneficial for women, the passage of the Affordable Care Act offers coverage to a young woman that extends into the senior stages of her life. It’s now our turn to merge all of the resources of the Affordable Care Act and the momentum around National Women’s Health Week to enhance women’s health in our communities.”
