Edwards Statement on Sixth Anniversary of Supreme Court’s Citizens United Decision
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) issued the following statement marking the sixth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision.
“Six years ago today, the Supreme Court issued one of the most disastrous rulings to our nation’s democracy. The Citizens United v FEC decision upended the process of America’s representative democracy, allowing corporations and a wealthy few individuals to dictate our political discourse by injecting unlimited money into campaigns. We witnessed unprecedented levels of spending in the elections that occurred since that flawed decision. The future of our democracy cannot allow these special interests to continue purchasing our elections.
“I am proud to be the first Member of the House to introduce a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Only by giving specific authority to Congress to regulate corporate expenditures on political activity will we be able to remove corporate influence on political activity. We must also pursue every legislative avenue to reduce unfettered spending, bring more transparency to the process, and ensure our public policy is protected. There is no alternative to overturning Citizens United, and I will continue working with my congressional colleagues and all stakeholders until we successfully wrestle back our democracy from the special interests.”
