Gowdy Statement on Obama's Plan to Close Gitmo

February 23, 2016
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Trey Gowdy (SC-04) issued the following statement after the Obama Administration presented their plan to close the Guantanamo Bay facility and relocate these detainees to the United States:

“President Obama’s plan to relocate dangerous terrorists to United States soil is not only reckless but against the law. Time and time again, Congress has spoken clearly on this issue by passing, with bipartisan, veto-proof majorities, legislation barring the transfer of detainees to U.S. soil. In fact, the most recent National Defense Authorization Act included such language and was signed into law by the President last November. Furthermore, Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Secretary of Defense Ash Carter have confirmed the law “currently does not allow” Guantanamo Bay detainee transfers to the United States. Rather than striving to fulfill campaign promises, President Obama must put our national security first, follow the law, and halt all plans to transfer Gitmo detainees to the United States.”
