There is no question that our nation’s health care system is in desperate need of reform. The consequences of the Affordable Care Act have devastated Pinellas and American families, individuals and businesses – driving up premium prices, canceling policies, reducing worker hours, and placing increased costs on small businesses that can no longer afford them.

There are specific issues creating cost and access barriers to quality health care and coverage for our nation’s citizens, which our government can address and eliminate by enacting specific solutions. We must work to lower government bureaucracy, intrusion and dependence when it comes to health care and consider private sector solutions that will effectively overturn specific problems within our health care system.

For example, I have proposed we work to create a statutory construct for health care that resembles the model of less regulation and less government intrusion used for term life insurance.  We should consider a model that allows a young person to purchase an affordable lifetime plan, beginning at an early age, with actuarially sound price stability, portable across state lines, decoupled from employers but eligible for employer reimbursement, and not eligible to be canceled based on intervening health events.  However, current big government restrictions and mandates for health care plans will always get in the way of effective, specific solutions from becoming a reality.
