Rules Committee Democrats Oppose Extension of Overbroad Deposition Powers

WASHINGTON, DC — The House Rules Committee today approved a plan to extend for another year the unrestricted authority for four House committees to conduct staff depositions at any time, on any subject, for any reason. The deposition authority allows four committees—the Committees on Energy and Commerce, Financial Services, Science and Technology, and Ways and Means—to compel American citizens to travel to Washington in order to provide testimony under oath and behind closed doors.
