U.S. SENATOR DAN COATS BIOGRAPHY

Dan Coats is a United States Senator for Indiana.

A graduate of Wheaton College, Coats began his service to our nation in the U.S. Army before attending Indiana University School of Law. After working for a life insurance company in Fort Wayne, he joined the office of then-Congressman Dan Quayle as a district representative. Coats has served Hoosiers in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.

Honoring a term-limits pledge, Coats stepped down from his Senate seat in 1999. In 2001, he was named Ambassador to Germany, arriving in the country only a few days before the tragic events of 9/11.

After his time as Ambassador, he worked at a law firm and continued to be active in public service. Coats has served as President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and on the boards of many civic and volunteer organizations. Senator Coats also formed The Foundation for American Renewal with his wife, Marsha, to continue their work with faith-based initiatives.

Concerned about the direction of our country, Coats returned to the U.S. Senate in 2011 to help restore fiscal responsibility and ensure that future generations inherit a safe and prosperous America.

In the 114th Congress, Coats serves on three Senate committees: Finance, Select Intelligence and the Joint Economic Committee.

Dan and Marsha Coats met in college and have three adult children and 10 grandchildren.
