The Gardens at Viscaya and the Bay Area alone make this beautiful place alone worth the visit. Gorgeous, extensive views - the exterior of the house is beautiful and tranquil and you can make an entire day just of that. I encourage visitors to attend- it's a gorgeous place with a lot of great Florida history. I would say though- I was deeply troubled by the state of the interior rooms of the house- especially the 2nd story, where there is clear signs of damage to the rooms- water damage on the ceilings in multiple rooms- peeling plasterwork, dirty walls, broken doors, water staining through satin wall paneling. It was encouraging to see the east loggia and rhe Venetian pool receiving some attention- but the entire house is in a state. I'm concerned that while Miami- Dade is currently receiving revenues from tourism and events- they are either clearly underfunded, or the property is being mismanaged- because they are not putting that money towards preserving a Florida historic landmark. Viscaya needs a major triage in either funding management, or state grant writing to do some heavy preservation work, or we are going to see this place, and its previous history, fall apart before our eyes. Also- And this is a secondary observation to the first- the current art exhibit was an eyesore to me as a first time visitor- art is subjective- but the exhibits were not in keeping with the reasons people want to visit sites like Viscaya- which is the stepping into another world, and experiencing life in another century for a short amount of time. These strange pictures of a man dressed up in various attires and the giant neon fluorescent bulbs with 21st century bumper sticker meme phrases written on it I found, frankly obnoxious. I get wanting to juxtapose history with contemporary themes but I found the execution in poor taste. I might work with another artist in the future, or limit the setting of the artwork to the gardens, or grounds, if the art can't be in keeping with the style of the house. Just some feedback on that topic.
