Immigration

Our country is strengthened by its diversity.  The United States was largely built by immigrants who believed in the promise of liberty and wanted to make our nation great.  Comprehensive immigration reform is necessary now because our current system and approach to immigration is not working.  We need bipartisan, common sense comprehensive immigration reform that increases border security, and ensures that high-skilled and talented workers can work in the U.S. to keep American companies competitive.  We need to make sure that our fruit and dairy farmers in Central New York have the skilled workforce they need and do not have to break the law in order to keep their businesses running.

There are approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.  We must ensure that any legislation concerning immigration reform preserves families; provides a pathway to citizenship for law-abiding immigrants; allows for a chance to pursue education and training; and ensures immigrants can work, pay taxes, and contribute to our economy.  In addition, we must pursue a reform policy that maintains a secure border and targets any deportation proceedings towards violent criminals.

The Senate has passed bipartisan legislation that has been introduced in the House as H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. H.R. 15.  I am proud to cosponsor this bill and I will be sure to support it when it comes to the House floor for a vote.
