Women's Issues

During my career in public office, I have fought hard for women’s rights on important issues like paycheck fairness, the Violence Against Women Act, and ensuring a woman’s right to choose.  Growing the economy and strengthening the middle class are my top priorities, and we can only do that if we treat all workers equally under the law.  On average, women make $0.77 for every dollar that men are paid at work.  That is not right.  I voted for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and was proud to see it pass in 2009.  There is more we can do to assist women in the work place, and I will continue to push for measures that support paycheck fairness.

I was an original cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Act and was glad to see this long overdue legislation pass the House last year.  This legislation is an important step to reducing domestic violence around the country and I was glad to stand with  a bipartisan majority of my colleagues in support of this bill.

During each of my terms in Congress, I have consistently supported laws ensuring a woman’s right to choose and access reproductive health care. I strongly support the Constitution's guarantee of personal freedom and privacy, and those rights are the foundation for a woman's right to choose to end her pregnancy.

I am a cosponsor of H.R. 3471, the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2013, which would prohibit states from passing laws that impose burdensome requirements on access to reproductive health services.  These state statues block women’s access to health care and infringe upon their constitutionally guaranteed rights.  I also strongly support the expanded access to contraceptive care that was included in the Affordable Care Act.
