Veterans
I am a proud member of the House Armed Services Committee and honored to represent and serve so many brave service members, veterans, and their families. We owe all veterans a debt of gratitude for their service. We need to provide high-quality health care to our veterans once they return home, and we must ensure that veterans and their families have the right educational and job opportunities available to them following their service. It is critical that we provide the tools veterans need to succeed during the transition from active service back into civilian life.
Congress and the Administration must act to eliminate the benefits backlog so that our veterans can get access to the benefits they have earned and deserve. I am a cosponsor of H.R. 1739, the Veterans Backlog Reduction Act, which would allow veterans to receive a provision payment if their claim has not been processed within 125 days, and H.R. 1824, the VA Regional Office Accountability Act, which directs the VA to conduct a report on each VA regional office that failed to reach administrative goals concerning the timeliness and accuracy of veterans' claims adjudication.
To improve the delivery of veterans health care services to the nation’s nearly 16 million veterans, service members, military retirees, and other beneficiaries, I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2590, the 21st Century Health Care Heroes Act: This bipartisan bill would merge the electronic health records of the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs to accelerate the exchange of real-time data between VA and DOD and allow VA and DOD patients to download their medical records.
It is essential that returning veterans have access to job and educational opportunities. We must do everything we can to connect veterans with employers who are hiring in their communities, and giving them the training they need to move re-enter the workforce. I am a cosponsor of H.R. 1796, the Troop Talent Act of 2013, which would help ease the transition of service members from active duty to the civilian workforce by improving the alignment of specialty skills acquired in the military with civilian credentials or licenses required for post-service employment, expanding existing efforts to meet current workforce demands and match the skills of service members with growth industries, and implementing rigorous standards to ensure credentials translate into the private sector.
