Onondaga Community College receives $2.5 million for agribusiness job training

Onondaga Community College announced Tuesday its receipt of $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to create training programs supporting employment in the agribusiness food processing industry.

"Our efforts will focus on workforce development needs of local employers and workers in the critically important agribusiness and food industry sectors, one of the priorities identified by the Central New Regional
Economic Development Council," said OCC President Dr. Casey Crabill, said in a statement.

Partnering with area employers, non-profit organizations and the state, the college will develop five competency-based learning programs.

• Food science, safety and quality assurance

• Food production and processing

• Distribution and logistics

• Train-the-trainer supervisory training

• Hospitality and food service

"The program will align with those who successfully complete it with over 2,400 annual openings in Central New York and 12,687 jobs by 2020 at wage rates that exceed regional averages for entry- and medium-skilled workers," said Roger Mirobito, OCC communications coordinator, in a statement.
