Fortenberry Cosponsored ABLE Act Passes House of Representatives
December 3, 2014 Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today announced that the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, which he cosponsored, passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of ###-###. The Fortenberry-cosponsored legislation helps disabled persons and their families save money tax-free to pay for education, housing, transportation, and health care.
“I'm very proud of this legislation,” Fortenberry said. “The ABLE Act is a truly good bill. The strong bipartisan vote shows that creative policy to empower Americans can still be achieved.”
The ABLE Act allows disabled persons and their families to put money in 529A (or ABLE) investment accounts to help pay for disability-related expenses. Like a 529 college savings account, families could save for their disabled child’s long-term expenses. With an ABLE account, disabled persons will be able to supplement benefits already received through private and government insurance programs.
Fortenberry is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
