Omaha World Herald: Fortenberry wants House to return early to debate military action
October 1, 2014Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., called Tuesday for his House colleagues to abandon the campaign trail and get back to Capitol Hill to debate U.S. military action in the Middle East.
Fortenberry said the situation is changing rapidly in that part of the world. The U.S. military and its allies are hitting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq from the air and supporting Kurdish and Iraqi security forces.
“While I am supportive of the president’s use of airstrikes within the framework of an international coalition, the complexities and possible duration of the effort demand congressional oversight and possible authorization,” Fortenberry said. “Congress needs to be intimately involved on questions of duration and the extent of the action.”
