The cynicism that is deep and widespread among Americans toward Congress and the federal government is not healthy for the nation, U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry said Tuesday.

While recognizing that, Americans — including lawmakers — need to resist the urge to continue to constantly criticize and tear down the institution of government.

“If we cut down all the trees, where will the birds sing? That’s kind of a trite way of looking at it, but it makes the point,” the Republican lawmaker said. “We have to demand a new way of thinking. We can’t abandon the investment.”
