Rep. Maffei Statement on the Ryan Budget
April 10, 2014 (Washington, DC) –U.S. Representative Dan Maffei (D-Syracuse) today released the following statement regarding his vote against the Fiscal Year 2015 House Republican Budget, also known as the Ryan Budget:
“Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle need to get serious about balancing the budget and reducing the national debt and deficit, but not on the backs of our seniors and middle class families. Unfortunately, this year’s Ryan Budget is more of the same recklessness and extreme partisanship we have seen year after year from House Republican leadership. This plan ends the Medicare guarantee as we know it, cuts critical investments in infrastructure and education, and forces middle class families in Central New York to pay an average of $2,000 more each year in taxes. This is not the balanced and responsible solution we need to get our fiscal house in order and grow the economy. I call on my colleagues to work together to create a bipartisan budget that promotes economic growth, creates jobs, protects our seniors, and strengthens the middle class.”

REP. DAN MAFFEI
FLOOR SPEECH IN OPPOSITION TO THE RYAN BUDGET
APRIL 9, 2014
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Speaker, I rise today in strong opposition to the legislation H. Con. Res. 96, the budget proposed by the Chairman of the Budget Committee, the gentleman from Wisconsin, Mr. Ryan.
Unfortunately, this year’s Ryan Budget is more of the same recklessness and extreme partisanship we’ve seen year after year from House Republican leadership.
Under Ryan’s plan, middle class families in my district in Central New York will pay an average of $2,000 more each year in taxes.
Once again, the Ryan Budget ends the Medicare guarantee as we know it and would turn Medicare into a privatized voucher program and shift health care costs to seniors.
It cuts critical investments in job creation and infrastructure and it slashes education funding at a time when local school districts in Central New York are already struggling to find the resources necessary to provide our children with the high-quality education that they deserve.
This is not a balanced approach, and it’s not a responsible solution, and people in Central New York and across our country need better.
Congress must get serious about balancing the budget and reducing the national debt and deficit, but not on the backs of our seniors, and not on the backs of the middle class, and certainly not on the backs of future generations of Americans.
At a time when many Central New Yorkers are still struggling as the economy recovers, we simply cannot accept the irresponsible policies in the Ryan Budget.
I call on my colleagues to reject the Ryan Budget and work together to create a bipartisan budget that gets our fiscal house in order and promotes economic growth, creates jobs, protects our seniors, and strengthens the middle class.
I yield back my time.
