Luján to Host Service Academy Day in Los Alamos and Present Congressional Award to Anna Zerkle on Wednesday
9/27/11Tuesday, September 27, 2011
Santa Fe, NM – Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District, in conjunction with Los Alamos High School, will host a Service Academy Day event for students, families, and counselors to learn about military academy opportunities for prospective students. The event will be held at Los Alamos High School on Wednesday, September 28.
Attendees will have the chance to discuss different service options at military academies representing each branch of the armed services and meet with academy representatives from the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
At the event, Luján will also present Anna Zerkle of Los Alamos with the Congressional Award Bronze Medal. Zerkle earned the award through her numerous hours of volunteer service for the Tour de Los Alamos Bicycle Race. She also achieved the required Physical Fitness goal and Expedition goal through her participation on her high school volleyball team and her hiking trip that took her close to the top of New Mexico’s highest peak.
The Congressional Award Program requires young people to set and achieve personally challenging goals in the areas of Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. In the process, they serve the community and learn about qualities such as responsibility, citizenship, and the ability to plan and organize. The program is open to all young people age 14 to 23.
