Luján Comments on Natural Resources Hearing on Rising Gas Prices

Rising gas prices are a reminder of the importance of reducing our dependence on foreign oil and continuing to invest in renewable energy.  As higher prices at the pump threaten our economic recovery and take a toll on family budgets, it is critical that we get serious about addressing this problem.

As New Mexico continues to produce oil and gas, it is critical we do so in a way that develops our resources responsibly in order to protect the quality of our air, water, and land.  Increased domestic production of oil and gas alone, however, will not solve the problem of high gas prices.  U.S. oil production is at record levels, yet we continue to see higher gas prices.  It is clear that we need to take bold steps that support renewable, clean energy that offers enormous potential to create new, high-paying jobs, reduce oil imports, and as a result, reduce the price at the pump for American consumers.
