“As you know, about 18 months ago the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill, supported by the Chamber of Commerce, by the AFL-CIO, by growers and farm workers, and faith groups. It had broad support. Seventy percent of the public indicated they thought we ought to fix the immigration system. So, this may be a forcing action and give [Speaker] John Boehner, who Joe, I think really wants to pass, he said he wants to pass a comprehensive immigration bill. I believe Speaker Boehner, I think he's very sincere in this effort, and this may be a forcing action, which will give him the opportunity.”
“It may give Speaker Boehner the opportunity to say to his Members, ‘Look, the president has done an executive order, but that's not permanent law, and we can change that and we can make the law if we pass a comprehensive bill.’ And every Republican leader that I’ve talked to says the immigration system is broken so it's not a question that action is not needed. I think everybody concludes that action is needed… What we heard in the election was an American public deeply frustrated, angry and saying, hey, ‘You guys need to sit down and get the work of our country done and help make our lives better.’ I think we ought to all listen to that. After all, everybody shares two things in common in the Congress of the United States. Number one, we're all Americans. Number two, we've been sent here by our constituents, our neighbors to try to make things better, and I think we can do that if we work together, and I think Speaker Boehner wants to do that.”
“…I would hope that the President, Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader McConnell, and all of us would understand that we have to come to an agreement. It's not our way or their way, it is an agreed way, and I think that's how it will work. I hope and I think that's what the American people expect. So, I think the Republicans, hopefully, will take some of what the President suggests. I think we and the President should take some of what the Republicans suggest and fix the system that everybody says is broken.”
