Boustany Votes to Prevent Tax Increases

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 5771, the Tax Increase Prevention Act.

H.R. 5771 will retroactively extend a number of tax provisions that expired over the past year, preventing tax increases on Louisiana families and small businesses before tax filing season begins next year. The Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) estimates H.R. 5771 would grant $44.7 billion in relief between FY2015-FY2024. A summary of each of the provisions is attached.

Boustany said: “Granting tax relief to Louisiana families and businesses is vital to our state’s continuing economic success. Now is not the time to allow tax increases to take effect, taking more from the pocketbooks of working families and slowing small business growth.

“I’m disappointed the President has inserted himself into this debate by proactively issuing a veto threat on this deal. The President needs to show leadership, not play politics. As Louisiana’s leader on tax issues, I’ll continue to be on watch to prevent harmful tax increases that will hurt Louisiana’s economy.”
