Boustany Named Ways & Means Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., M.D., (R-South Louisiana) issued the following statement after he was named Chairman of the House Ways & Means Human Resources Subcommittee for the 114th Congress by Chairman-elect Paul Ryan (R-WI).

The jurisdiction of the Human Resources Subcommittee includes public assistance provisions of Social Security including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), child care, child and family services, child support, foster care, adoption, supplemental security income, food stamp eligibility, and low income energy assistance.  Chairman-elect Paul Ryan has identified welfare reform legislation as a primary focus of the full Committee, positioning Boustany as a top lieutenant for the Chairman-elect over the next two years.

Boustany previously served two terms as Chairman of the House Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee, launching the investigation into improper targeting of conservative groups by the IRS and exposing billions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse at the agency. In addition to Human Resources, Boustany will serve on the Trade Subcommittee in the next Congress.

Boustany said: “Our social safety net is in place to ensure that Americans who fall on hard times are able to get back on their feet. But the potential for waste, fraud, and abuse is real. Currently, these well-intentioned programs are driving up the debt and deficit and burdening future generations of Americans. Taking action now will ensure these programs are around to give a helping hand to the needy for years to come. I’m honored to have the support of Chairman-elect Ryan and look forward to serving with him as the Chairman of the Human Resources Subcommittee.”
