A modern transportation system is essential for both economic development and the safety of our citizens. One of the questions that a company considering Alabama as a location asks is whether its goods can be quickly and efficiently moved to market. Therefore, it is essential that our communities in the Sixth District have the benefit of modern and safe roads, highways, and bridges.

Because Alabama has long deserved to receive a much more equitable share of federal highway dollars, it was my pleasure to help rewrite the formula on how gasoline taxes paid into the highway trust fund are distributed to the states. As a result, Alabama now receives an average of $200 million more per year in federal transportation funds for projects like Corridor X and the Northern Beltline. Other road modernization and safety projects that I have been involved in include the I-20 widening and safety improvements in St. Clair County; the Highway 216 Safety Improvements in Tuscaloosa County; the Valleydale Road widening in Shelby County; and the Highway 5 improvements in Bibb County.
