COOSA COUNTY
Coosa County was created in 1832 from lands ceded in the Creek Indian Treaty of Cusseta and from parts of Montgomery County. Hernando DeSoto is believed to be the first explorer to visit what is now Coosa County. The county is named for the Coosa River, which forms a western boundary with Chilton County. Coosa County is comprised of 657 square miles. The county seat is Rockford.
Coosa County is known for its the many recreational activities affored by its waterways and its sport fishing is considered some of the best in Alabama. Lay Lake and Mitchell Lake are centers for fishing and boating. Hatchet Creek is home to beds of the famous Cahaba Lilly.
