BLOUNT COUNTY

Blount County became part of the 6^th Congressional District on January 1, 2013 as a result of a redistricting proposal approved by the state legislature.

Blount County is in the northeastern section of Alabama. It was formed from land ceded to the federal government by the Creek Nation on August 9, 1814 and was created by the Alabama Territorial Legislature on February 6, 1818.  The county’s population was 57,322 as of the 2010 census.  The county seat is Oneonta.

Blount County, which covers 675 square miles, rests in a rich mineral region which includes the Warrior coal field. According to the Geological Survey of Alabama, the Warrior coal field is the largest southernmost coal-producing region in the United States. In addition to a growing manufacturing and industrial sector, agriculture plays a key role in the local economy. Blount County ranks in the top ten of production of poultry, eggs, and cattle statewide.  The Black Warrior River runs through the county, which offers many outdoor and recreational activities.

Blount County is known as the Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama. It contains the oldest covered bridges in the state and has more historic covered bridges standing than any other county in Alabama. Several of the bridges are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This heritage is celebrated each fall during the Blount County Covered Bridge Festival.
