    Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted for the House and Senate compromise F.Y. 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that provides necessary authorities and funding for America's military.     Huntsville, AL – NASA announced on Wednesday that the Space Launch System (SLS), developed in Northern Alabama and managed at Huntsville's Marshall Space Flight Center, has formally moved from its "formulation" stage into "implementation." After a rigorous review, NASA is committing to a funding level and readiness date that will keep America on track to send humans to Mars in the 2030s. This thorough review, known as Key Decision Point C, provides a launch readiness schedule based on an initial SLS flight no later than November 2018.

    Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted for H.R. 4718, a jobs bill that permanently lets employers deduct 50 percent of depreciable investments, such as new equipment purchases, in the same year the equipment is purchased. Under current law, the equipment purchases are depreciated and deducted over an extended number of years. This pro-growth legislation gives job creators better cash-flow and increased access to capital to invest and grow the economy. This provision in the tax code expired in 2013, but had previously been temporarily extended on multiple occasions.

    For background, the White House negotiated the May 31, 2014 release of Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for five top-level Taliban terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. President Obama stated that he was "concerned about Bergdahl's health," and "that assurances from the government of Qatar, the Persian Gulf emirate where the released Taliban commanders will remain for at least a year, helped solidify the deal."     Washington, DC – The House today passed H.R. 4810, the Veteran Access to Care Act of 2014, by a 426-0 vote. This legislation directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to enter into contracts with non-VA facilities to provide care to veterans who have waited longer than the wait-time goals of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), have been notified that an appointment will not be available within the VHA wait-time goals, or live more than 40 miles from a VA medical facility. In addition, H.R. 4810 eliminates bonuses and performance awards for all VA employees for fiscal years 2014-2016.

  • CJS Appropriations Bill Passes House, Provides a Boost in Funding for NASA

    Washington, D.C. – This morning, Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) announced House passage of the fiscal year 2015 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations bill by a vote of 321 to 87. The bill funds the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other related agencies. While this legislation contains $51.2 billion in total discretionary funding, a reduction of $398 million below the fiscal year 2014 enacted level, it increases funding for NASA by $250 million above the 2014 enacted level. In addition, this bill supports policies that enable a substantially better launch tempo for the Space Launch System (SLS) than currently projected by NASA.

  • America Must Counter Russian Effort to Thwart American Access to Space Station and Military Satellites

    Washington, D.C. – Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin recently announced twin Russian sanctions against the United States that, first, ban exports of Russian rocket engines used by Decatur, Alabama's United Launch Alliance for American military satellites and, second, beginning in 2020, deny America's use of Russian rockets to access the International Space Station. As a result of President Obama's unilateral termination of the Constellation program in 2010, coupled with the mothballing of America's Space Shuttle fleet in 2011, America has no human spaceflight capability and has been reduced to relying on Russia for access to the Space Station.

There are more than 23,000 pieces of debris larger than a softball orbiting Earth, travelling at speeds up to 17,500 mph.   • Brooks Votes to Protect Americans from IRS Targeting, Hold Lois Lerner in Contempt

    Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House passed a resolution last night holding former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, and a second resolution, calling on the Attorney General to appoint a special counsel to investigate the IRS's targeting of conservative groups. The contempt resolution will now be automatically referred to the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, part of the Justice Department, where the contempt charge will be presented to a grand jury for further review. Then, the Justice Department will decide whether to prosecute Lerner in the case.

    Washington, D.C. – Today Space Subcommittee Vice-Chair Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) questioned NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr., about NASA's back-up plans should Russia cease giving American astronauts rides to the International Space Station. During Brooks' first five minutes of questions, Administrator Bolden testified the Obama Administration has no back-up plan for human space flight should Russia stop giving American astronauts rides to the Space Station and that the soonest American space flight will resume is 3½ years away via the "commercial crew" space effort.     Huntsville, AL - Today Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) recognized Alabama's Fifth District 2014 Congressional Art Competition winner in a special awards ceremony at the Huntsville Museum of Art's Great Hall. The winner, 17-year-old Victoria Lewis, won for her charcoal-medium entry entitled, "Carl." Miss Lewis is a senior at Bob Jones High School. Her art teacher is Ms. Jennifer Norton.
