Guthrie Votes to Fund Government, Authorize Training & Weapons to Combat ISIL

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Congressman Brett Guthrie today voted in support of H.J. Res. 124, legislation to continue funding for government programs and services until December 11, 2014.

H.J. Res. 124 also includes language to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).  The resolution authorizes the U.S. military to train and equip certain Syrian rebels who have been vetted by the U.S. Government.  The measure will expire at the end of December and requires reports to Congress every 90 days.

“It remains in our country’s best interest to destroy ISIL,” said Congressman Guthrie.  “This group has proven to be an incredibly dangerous and critical threat to our national security.  As the leader of a global coalition, we must train and equip regional fighters to confront the threat at hand, as well as to restore peace in the region.”

The bill’s primary focus is to provide funding to continue government operations and services through December 11th while a full year spending bill is negotiated and passed.

“Funding the government for short periods of time is not the best way to do business, but Senate Democrats have left us with no other options.  To date, the House has passed 11 appropriations bills at the committee level and seven through the full House.  Unfortunately, the Senate’s inaction has prevented us from working in regular order,” said Congressman Guthrie.
