Guthrie: President Must Outline Clear Strategy for Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C.Congressman Brett Guthrie today issued the following statement in advance of President Obama’s address to the nation regarding the growing threat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS):

“As President Obama prepares to address the nation this evening I, along with my fellow Kentuckians, need to hear a definitive and long-term strategy – one that doesn’t end when the current, most immediate threat does.  ISIS has proven itself to be a serious threat with a clear objective to cause as much harm to their enemies – including the United States – as possible.  They can and must be defeated.  We should also work to strengthen the Iraqi government’s security capabilities, partnering with our allies in the region for a mission to see peace restored.

“During my town hall meetings over the last five weeks, I heard a number of concerns about ISIS and the growing unrest abroad.  I am always glad to see such resounding support for our men and women in uniform and all those who defend our freedom and keep our country safe.

“Before entering into any form of conflict, whether it be air strikes or beyond, three criteria must be met: the delivery of a clear strategy for victory, a path toward lasting peace and the appropriate consultation of Congress.”
