Selma group serving up breakfast to honor MLK - Selma Times-Journal

A Selma organization committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans is leading a breakfast to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

The Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is hosting their 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast at the Selma Convention Center Jan. 20 at 7:30 a.m. Pinkie Platt, the president of Selma Chapter of The Links, Inc., said the event brings the Selma-Dallas County community together while raising money for the group’s scholarship program.

“It’s a way honoring the memory of Dr. King,” Platt said. “It brings back to remembrance what the struggle was, helps us to look back in the past, and helps us to forge the future.”

Congresswoman Terri Sewell will serve as the guest speaker for the ceremony, which cost $15 to attend. She will discuss Dr. King’s mission and how far our community over the years, Platt said.

“It helps the youth of Selma and Dallas County to know where we’re going and where we have been,” Platt said. “It helps us to understand the progress that we’ve made and hopefully the progress that we will continue to make. “

She said that the young people must always acknowledge the struggle that African Americans faced in their fight for equality in order to move forward.

During the breakfast, The Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will award a local resident with the Distinguished Citizen Award. The nominees for the award are Selma residents Michael Johnson, Loretta Wimberly and Cheyenne Web.

The group will also honor five recipients of their scholarship program.

For ticket information, call Platt at 505-9185 or any The Links, Inc. member.

Chairperson Betty Miller at 875-2163.
