WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to the Commerce Department's announcement of a new phase in the National Export Initiative, which aims to increase American exports:

“Promoting the growth of U.S. exports remains one of the core components of the Make It in America plan for jobs and competitiveness, and I welcome the Administration’s announcement today of a new phase in the National Export Initiative.  Helping American businesses – especially small businesses – access new markets for their products will help manufacturers and farmers in Maryland and across the country expand and hire for more jobs right here in our communities.  As jobs are created, opportunities will be created as well, helping more of our people secure a place in a strong and growing middle class.

“Since its launch in 2010, the National Export Initiative has helped our country grow its exports by $700 billion, and more than 11.3 million jobs are now supported by exports, including at the nearly 30,000 businesses who had never before sold their products abroad until the Initiative was begun.  Under NEI/NEXT, the Commerce Department will seek to connect more American businesses with foreign consumers and expand financing resources so more businesses can join the ranks of first-time exporters.

“I am glad the Administration is taking action today, but Congress has an important role in promoting exports as well, and it can begin by reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank without delay. This and other bipartisan Make It In America legislation to promote private sector job growth and global manufacturing competitiveness deserve consideration on the House Floor, and I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve that goal.”
