Granger: Child migrant crisis not about immigration reform

Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas) on Wednesday said that the influx of child migrants illegally entering the U.S. was not an issue of immigration reform.

Granger, who visited a Customs and Border Patrol facility and Air Force base serving as a temporary shelter for the unaccompanied minors over the congressional recess, said it was a separate "humanitarian crisis."

"Despite the president's claims, this is not about immigration reform, this is about managing the immediate humanitarian crisis that this country faces at the Texas-Mexico border," Granger said.

"Throughout my visit one message was clear - please don’t call this an immigration reform issue, this is a humanitarian crisis and we need help now," Granger added.

Granger is a member of the House GOP "working group" tasked with coming up with how to respond to the child migrant surge.

Republican Reps. John Carter (Texas), Mario Diaz-Balart (Fla.), Bob Goodlatte (Va.), Michael McCaul (Texas), Steve Pearce (Nev.) and Matt Salmon (Ariz.) are also part of the working group.

The working group will provide its first update to the rest of the House GOP conference on July 15.
