Lamborn Reacts to Romney’s Pledge to Cut Federal Funding for Public Broadcasting

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05), the sponsor of H.R. 1076, the only bill to ever pass the U.S. House to eliminate federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR), and sponsor of H.R. 69, a bill to eliminate all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), issued the following statement in reaction to Governor Mitt Romney’s pledge to defund CPB:

“Like Mitt Romney, I like Big Bird. That is not the issue. The Governor recognizes the larger problem is out-of-control government spending. I like the Governor’s test for what programs to keep and what to cut. It’s common sense. If we have to borrow money from China to keep Big Bird in his nest, it’s time for him to go!”– Doug Lamborn (CO-05)

Note:The House Appropriations Subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services passed a funding bill in July 2012 that would put CPB on a glide path towards self-sufficiency. The CPB has been funded through advance appropriations in previous years. This year, the bill does not provide an advance appropriation for CPB for fiscal year 2015. To encourage CPB to operate exclusively on private funds, the bill rescinds $111.3 million of the fiscal year 2013 advanced appropriation, and $222.5 million of the fiscal year 2014 advanced appropriation.
