Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) understands the challenges of a work-life balance first-hand. As a politician and mom, she's hoping to make a change to the way the U.S. caters to working parents.
The congresswoman spoke to HuffPost Live on Monday from the first White House Summit on Working Families, and specifically lamented the number of parents she sees slaving away at their jobs only to have entire paychecks go towards child care.
"[We need to make sure] parents [are] able to be plugged into their [kids'] educational lives, make sure that when it comes to child care we have top quality affordable access to child care, where parents aren't having to choose between going to work and being on government assistance," she said, "because working doesn't make sense if the child care bill consumes most of their salary."
This issue affects men and women of all backgrounds, Wasserman Schultz said.
"My girlfriends and I -- all of whom are moms -- we're all worrying about how to balance work and family," she said.
