Rep. McCarthy Joins with Mayor Bloomberg to Urge Repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment

Harmful language hampers law enforcement’s ability to trace guns used in crimes

Today, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) joined with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Mayors Against Illegal Guns to urge repeal of the Tiahrt amendment. This harmful amendment restricts law enforcement’s use of ballistic tracing data with prior authorization from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

According to McCarthy, “The Tiahrt amendment handcuffs our nation’s law enforcement. Instead of providing police officers with the necessary tools, the Tiahrt amendment imposes outrageous restrictions on crime solving activities. This is not a pro-gun or anti-gun issue.  It is a pro-law enforcement and common sense issue. Simply put, the Tiahrt amendment must be repealed.”

The House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to vote on the Tiahrt amendment this Thursday during their consideration of the Commerce Justice and Science Appropriations legislation markup.
