WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), issued the following statement after today’s contraception announcement by President Obama:

“As a strong supporter of both religious freedom and efforts to improve women’s health, I appreciate the effort by the Administration to accommodate both religiously-sponsored institutions—such as hospitals and universities—and the needs of their employees under the new provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

“The plan announced by the President today will still allow every woman who seeks contraception to be able to obtain it under her healthcare coverage.

“It’s a shame that, in the 21st Century, when virtually all women use contraception at some point in their lives—in many cases, to treat a medical condition—these provisions can become so politically charged over such a basic healthcare need.”
