Raton Comet: Dignitaries, vets attend Raton VA clinic opening

RATON — A monumental celebration took place Friday (April 25) with the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new state-of-the-art VA (Veterans Administration) Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) located at 1493 Whittier Street on the south side of Raton.

After several years of planning, public input, and lobbying on the behalf of New Mexican military veterans by state and national legislative representatives for financial and other assistance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the dream of getting the new clinic to serve more than 1,200 veterans from the northeast New Mexico region and beyond is now a reality.

New Mexico VA Health Care System Director George Marnell was the master of ceremonies who spoke to the hundreds of military veterans, their families, supporters, and local, state and congressional representatives in attendance in welcoming the new 6,921 square-foot facility, which replaces the old clinic formerly located in the Doña Ana Shopping Center on S. 2nd Street.

Also in attendance were U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), U.S. Congressman Ben R. Luján (D-N.M.), and city of Raton and Colfax County officials.

...Luján, who toured the Raton VA Health Clinic in its construction phase during a visit to the area in December, addressed the crowd at last week’s grand opening ceremony, “I say, with the deepest sentiments I can, ‘Good morning, and Buenos dias les de Dios, it’s a beautiful day.’” The statement was met with applause from the audience in attendance.
