Nothing is more important to me than the quality of life in my district, and I am proud of the work I have done to improve infrastructure, preserve historic neighborhoods, fight for better zoning and create schools in my district. Whether working to create an academically rigorous public high school on the Upper East Side, seeking to restore the crumbling Queens seawall or fighting for a full build Second Avenue Subway, my first priority has always been to make my district a better place to live.

Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) re-introduced the Revitalizing Cities Through Parks Enhancement Act (RECIPE). This Bill establishes a $10 million grant program which helps non-profit community groups obtain leases for vacant, municipally-owned lots. This program also provides funding to help them transform these lots into small community gardens and parks.

Long Island City, NEW YORK: Congresswoman Carlolyn B. Maloney visited P.S. 17 - The Henry David Thoreau School - in Long Island City today, to amplify the importance of technology in the classroom. P.S. 17 recently received a grant of $7,000 from Verizon for computers, hardware, software, scanners, and printers to expand a program that incorporates online computer research into the educational activities of the students in the K through 5th grade school.
WASHINGTON-- Today, the White House released a Presidential Proclamation, signed by President Clinton, to grant national monument status to the forts and associated ordinance buildings on Governors Island.
NEW YORK - Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) and Charlie King, the Regional Director of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) highlighted the best HUD budget in 20 years, today, on the last day of the Clinton administration. Maloney noted that HUD's 2001 budget marks the highest funding level approved by Congress since 1981 and a 16% increase over fiscal year 2000.
NEW YORK: Last night, at a town forum that she organized and moderated, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (Manhattan, Queens) received a commitment from the President of the New York City Board of Education, William Thompson, and Board of Education member Dr. Irving Hamer, to construct an academically rigorous public high school on the East Side. Dr. Hamer indicated that the school, which will challenge its students with an AP (Advanced Placement) track and emphasize a college preparatory curriculum, will be located in a large existing school building at 96th Street and 1st Avenue. President Thompson suggested that a reasonable time frame for the school's completion would be September 2002.
NEW YORK, NY - With just two days left in the final term of President William Jefferson Clinton, today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) and with Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn), sent a letter to President Clinton asking him to find an opportunity in the last hours of his days in the "Casa Blanca" to add areas of Governors Island, including Castle Williams and Fort Jay, to the list of National Monuments.
