Nothing is more important to me than the quality of life in my district, and I am proud of the work I have done to improve infrastructure, preserve historic neighborhoods, fight for better zoning and create schools in my district. Whether working to create an academically rigorous public high school on the Upper East Side, seeking to restore the crumbling Queens seawall or fighting for a full build Second Avenue Subway, my first priority has always been to make my district a better place to live.

NEW YORK, NY - Originally requested in September of 1997, the final Roosevelt Island Seawall Study performed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE), was received this week by the Roosevelt Island Operating Committee (RIOC) and Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY). The study investigated the condition of the seawall that structurally supports Roosevelt Island as well as the non-sea-walled, South-End shoreline of the island. The seawall study states, “While imminent failure is not a concern, an appropriate preventative maintenance program should be undertaken.”
Washington, DC-Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07) and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) announced that a House subcommittee has approved $250,000 for the Long Island City Links Project (LIC Links). The funding will be made available through an earmark in the FY 2002 House Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. The full House will vote on the measure later this year.

Virginia Fields, together with Board of Education officials, announced a major investment in an existing school and the creation of another one the East Side of Manhattan.
NEW YORK - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan) expressed strong support for the Port Authority's recently released recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aimed at reducing flight congestion at LaGuardia airport. Key ideas in the Port Authority report include encouraging voluntary industry solutions, limiting the number of flights permitted each hour at LaGuardia, charging airlines a "congestion fee" for most flights during peak periods or conducting an auction among the airlines for a predetermined number of permitted flights, and providing financial incentives to encourage the use of larger aircrafts.
NEW YORK: Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (Queens, Manhattan) rallied in the rain with Queens residents this Saturday to oppose the irresponsible development of power plants in an already inundated Western Queens community. Maloney will also submit testimony tonight at a public hearing, regarding a 500 Megawatt power plant proposed for Astoria, sponsored by the New York Power Authority, the Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Public Service Commission. WASHINGTON, DC - Today, after reading news reports that members of the Bush Administration have been quietly devising a legal strategy to overturn former President Clinton's designation of the Governors Island forts as national monuments, Representatives Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan) and Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) sent the attached letter to President Bush. The letter asks President Bush to respect the bipartisan plan in place to preserve Governors Island and to select a member of his White House staff to serve as the chief point of contact on Governors Island for Governor George Pataki, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, the New York City Council, the New York Senate and House delegation, and local civic, historic preservation, business, and environmental groups.
NEW YORK: Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) released a United States Congressional Report that shows overcrowding in a staggering 85% of kindergarten through third grade classrooms in Manhattan school districts one through four. Parents and school officials joined Representative Maloney at P.S. 290 in District 2, to discuss the challenges they face in providing high-quality learning environments for students, while dealing with a teacher shortage, severely limited space for new classrooms, and a growing student population. The report, done through the Committee on Government Reform & Oversight at the request of Representative Maloney, also shows that more than a third of these classrooms are extremely overcrowded according to established national standards.
