Local Issues

Nothing is more important to me than the quality of life in my district, and I am proud of the work I have done to improve infrastructure, preserve historic neighborhoods, fight for better zoning and create schools in my district. Whether working to create an academically rigorous public high school on the Upper East Side, seeking to restore the crumbling Queens seawall or fighting for a full build Second Avenue Subway, my first priority has always been to make my district a better place to live.

WASHINGTON, DC – Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), and Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today sent letters requesting hearings to assess potential concerns with hydraulic fracturing of natural gas before relevant House Committees.  They issued the following joint statement about the letters:

“We hope that both Committees will hold hearings to determine whether our drinking water is safe.  If federal and state regulations have not kept pace with this growing industry, we need to know before it creates a public health concern. As Representatives from New York, we are especially concerned given that some of the wastewater from hydrofracking is being transported to public sewage plants in our state. By holding hearings, Congress, the industry, and the public would have a better understanding of wastewater treatment and what further Congressional action is needed.”

New York, NY – Today, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) applauded the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) for reversing a guidance it proposed last October that would have had an enormously destructive impact on mortgage lending in New York City.  FHFA’s proposed guidance would have restricted federal housing finance agencies such as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, among others, from investing in or guaranteeing mortgages on real property, including cooperatives and condominiums, that require a transfer fee covenant, or “flip tax,” when the property is bought or sold.
