Local Issues

Nothing is more important to me than the quality of life in my district, and I am proud of the work I have done to improve infrastructure, preserve historic neighborhoods, fight for better zoning and create schools in my district. Whether working to create an academically rigorous public high school on the Upper East Side, seeking to restore the crumbling Queens seawall or fighting for a full build Second Avenue Subway, my first priority has always been to make my district a better place to live.

Maloney today called on Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff to preserve the funding originally proposed for the nation’s two largest New Starts projects - the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access, calling them “vital to the New York City region's $1.26 trillion economy, the second-largest regional economy in the world.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), made the following statement after President Obama's announcement of the death of Osama Bin Laden:

"The announcement by the President was a truly historic moment after one of the most tumultuous decades in modern times.

"It comes as welcome news to those who lives were ripped apart by attacks of 9-11. As we approach the 10th anniversary of that terrible day, this is also a solemn moment to reflect and remember. Nearly 3,000 men women and children died in New York City alone, due directly to orders issued by Osama Bin Laden. His death will help bring a measure of closure to our city and it represents the end of a chapter in a larger story still be written.
 
"There is more healing that must take place, more rebuilding that must be accomplished, and there are many still struggling to fully recover.

"But tyrants are falling in the Middle East and freedom has made progress. And with this announcement I can hear my city breathing a sigh of relief."

Queens, NY – The New York City Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA) honored U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan) today at its monthly delegates’ meeting in Howard Beach.  DEA President Mike Palladino presented Maloney with an award recognizing her work to author and pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides health care and access to compensation for those who were injured by the toxic aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.  The bill’s namesake, the late James Zadroga, was an NYPD detective who died of 9/11-related illnesses.

New York, NY – Last night, Earth Day New York and the New York office of the Natural Resources Defense Council honored U.S. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) with their 2011 Public Official of the Year Award.  The award recognizes Maloney’s work to designate Newtown Creek a federal Superfund site, and to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act – a bill Maloney authored to provide health care and compensation for 9/11 responders and lower Manhattan residents injured by the toxic aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks.

Carolyn Maloney, Senator Liz Krueger, Assembly Member Jonathan Bing, representatives of Manhattan Community Board 6 and the Turtle Bay Association, and members of the east Midtown community celebrated the MTA’s decision to restore weekend bus service on the M50 bus line in Midtown.  Last year, the MTA announced a series of cutbacks in bus service throughout the city, resulting in the elimination of M50 bus service on nights and weekends.

New York, NY – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Liz Krueger, State Assembly Members Brian Kavanagh and Jonathan Bing, and City Council Members Dan Garodnick and Jessica Lappin expressed support for the Request for Proposals (RFP) issued by the New York City Department of Economic Development today regarding the creation of a new esplanade along the East River.  The RFP solicits proposals for a feasibility study that would include engineering, design, landscaping and other planning related to the new esplanade.  Funding for the RFP comes from a $475,000 earmark obtained by Congresswoman Maloney, federal funding from the Surface Transportation Program, and state funding from the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Charles Schumer (D-NY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) and five other co-sponsors in the Senate would hold accountable those railroad companies who worked with the Nazis during World War II by making them subject to legal action in U.S. courts. More than 75,000 Jews and thousands of others, including U.S. POWs, were transported from France toward concentration camps by French railroad companies.
