Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement today on the 35th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion:

“The 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade is a milestone in the struggle for women’s reproductive rights, a struggle that is far from over.

“Roe affirmed that abortion is a private matter and a constitutional right.  No one - not politicians, judges, or religious leaders - should be able to tamper with that right.  Unfortunately, the Bush Administration, Roberts Court and residual effects of years of Republican-controlled congresses threaten to send reproductive rights and women’s health back to the Stone Age.

“I came of age during a time when women had little control over their own reproductive health, and dangerous back alley abortions were all too common.  I never want to witness future generations of American women have to endure those hardships again.  I believe strongly in a women’s right to choose and remain committed to protecting the health and reproductive rights of women everywhere.”
