The leaders spoke at a news conference she convened outside the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital on East 23rd Street, which will benefit from more than $228 million in federal funding to help it recover from Sandy that will help the facility renovate and repair key departments and systems, replace damaged or destroyed medical equipment and building systems, and repair or replace damaged IT equipment damaged during the superstorm.

Every day since Hurricane Sandy swamped our city, I have been learning the stories of courageous acts and selfless deeds by my constituents who saved lives, or reached out to help others.  There’s Jon Candelaria from Stanley Isaacs Houses on Manhattan’s East Side, for instance, who risked his life during the storm to rescue a taxi driver whose cab was overwhelmed with water.  You can read about more about his heroic rescue here.

Although some progress is being made, there is a need throughout the most affected areas of New York City for non-perishable food, water, and other items for those who cannot get out to buy supplies for themselves.
