September 11, 2001, began like a typical Tuesday at the U.S. House of Representatives. Some Members spoke on the floor; others met with the leadership. Elsewhere on the Hill that morning, people had started talking about a plane crash in New York City. Then American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon, and many wondered if the U.S. Capitol was next.
