Maloney statement on NY congressional delegation meeting with MTA Chairman

NEW YORK – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) today released the following statement after a meeting of the New York congressional delegation with MTA Chairman/CEO Tom Prendergast.

“The outcome of this meeting was clear: the New York delegation strongly believes that the MTA and labor must return to the bargaining table to resolve the present impasse. With no realistic prospect for congressional action, both parties must work around the clock to secure a final deal that can avoid a strike. Mr. Prendergast says the parties are close to a deal. I hope that’s true, because the clock is ticking.

“A strike would be devastating for the residents of not just Long Island, but the economy of New York City as well. As the Representative for one of New York’s strongest business districts, I’m concerned that people wouldn’t be able to get to work, other forms of transportation into the city would become stressed, and the employers I represent would be severely impacted. Our hotels should be filled with tourists visiting the world’s greatest city - not commuters.”
